The HOME House Project
The Southeastern Center for Contemporary Art is traveling the exhibition of innovative housing designs from the HOME House Project, the future of affordable housing, through 2006. Perhaps you have already heard about it. With the HOME House Project, we challenged artists and architects to propose new designs for single - family houses for low - and moderate - income families using Habitat for Humanity's basic three - and four - bedroom house as a "point of departure". In addition, the design criteria included environmentally friendly and sustainable materials, technologies, and methods. The response that we received from the global community was simply overwhelming as more than 790 individuals and teams from the United States and 16 foreign countries registered for the project.
The traveling exhibition will include 100 of these innovative designs including the 25 Bank of American Design Award winners selected by architecture notables Michael Sorkin (NY), Ben Nicholson (Chicago), and Steve Badanes (Seattle). In addition, there are 13 three-dimensional computer animations (software) of some of the award-winning entries. The goals for the project are the following: to provide inspired design in the affordable housing market for those who historically have been ommitted from enjoying its benefits; to establish a new national housing model in terms of design, energy efficiency, environmental consciousness, and cost effectiveness that can change the stigma attached to affordable housing throughout the United States. The project intends to create a model program for communities everywhere that, once it begins to germinate, will continue to grow, develop, and multiply. The HOME House Project presents a unique opportunity to provide residents of low-and moderate-income housing with inspired living space usually reserved for the more affluent.
The HOME House Project book is now available through MIT Press. Besides offering overviews on the 100 designs, the book features essays by such noted architects/authors/educators Michael Sorkin, Ben Nicholson, and HOME House Project Director/SECCA senior curator David J. Brown. The rental fee for the exhibition is set at a very "affordable" $5,000. for up to eight weeks, plus shipping. We hope that you will consider hosting this landmark exhibition of our multi-year project and please feel free to contact me if you are interested or have any questions.
Sincerely,
